“The world is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those who think.”
– Horace Walpole
Positivity is the wrong
perspective.
Ignore the ones who sayYou can always improve and cling on to hope
Dwell in the realms of guilt
Since it makes no sense to
Make the most of your present
Since it makes no sense to
Make the most of your present
Sulk in the dark
Since it's pointless to
Focus on the light
Since it's pointless to
Focus on the light
Value yourself little
You have no reason to
Let go of your self-doubt
You have no reason to
Let go of your self-doubt
You're worthless, and just a
burden
Yet, you often assume that
You have so much potential
Yet, you often assume that
You have so much potential
You're running out of time
So there is no reason to think that
There is much life yet to live
So there is no reason to think that
There is much life yet to live
You've reached the end
So don't think that
A lifetime is at your disposal
So don't think that
A lifetime is at your disposal
A dark fate awaits you
So don't think that
Positivity is the correct perspective.
[Now read the lines from the bottom to the top (i.e.-read the poem backwards)...]
-Armaan Kothare
***
Vantage (noun)- a perspective, or a position from which you watch something
Message- The main aim of this poem is to throw emphasis on the concept of 'perspectives'. On reading the poem in the order that it has been displayed, the reader is presented with a very negative approach towards life. This approach attempts to pollute your mind and dissuade you from thinking of positivity and the themes of hope and motivation, while also rejecting the idea of living in the moment, and making the most out of every second of your life.
On reading the poem backwards, however, the intended message is symbolically shared with the reader. Reading the poem backwards, that is, from the bottom to the top, symbolises an ascent. The ascent of the mind, in particular, by letting go of all the evils that collude one's self-esteem. It symbolises the soul literally getting out of the purgatory state of negativity and guilt, and moving towards a positive take on life. I hope that this is your takeaway from this post: make the most out of every moment of your present...learn from the past, and hope for a brighter future. While you may not have 'infinity at your disposal', you definitely have the power of choosing your collective perspective towards life: which should ideally be a positive one.
An interesting example: consider the following sequence-
- > +
One interpretation is, "negative is greater than positive"...and the other perspective is to interpret the '>' sign as a direction symbol towards positivity...so you see, it all depends on the perspective you choose.
Choose wisely.

Thanks for reading!! I hope you liked my first attempt at writing a reverse poem...if yes, and if you have any sort of feedback or any thoughts that you'd like to share, feel free to do so in the comments section!

Negative thinking patterns are often wrongly justified as "being realistic"
ReplyDeleteYour poem highlights you can be hopeful while still taking the present for what it is, which is a wonderful addition to the age old correct yet incomplete "think positively" phrase.
As "think positively" does not mean delusionally assuming the good factors only, but considering all- good and bad- about the present and making out the best of it.
Fantastic way to put it, Armaan!
The reverse-poetry added a very creative layer to the whole concept.
Overall an interesting poem, keep writing! :)

👌Armaan-A perfect way to demonstrate- how -one can have a different Prespective to a given situation and that one must always try to look out for a brighter/ wider perspective- coz if you are stuck with only one side of the coin you will never know the other- Niket K Navalkar
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it! And that's an interesting view there...the 'two sides of a coin' approach...you're right, one should always look for the wider perspective!

I liked your interpretation of
ReplyDelete"Feeling" as a passive response to a situation
& "Thinking" as a positive active response to situation
(Horace Walpole)
This was very intelligently crafted into a Pallindromic form to display both perspectives
Well done Armaan
